Sinus Augmentation
SINUS AUGMENTATION
If you are missing teeth in the upper premolar or molar areas of your mouth and are considering dental implants, you may need to have a sinus lift in New London, CT with Dr. Gregory Toback and Dr. Marianne Urbanski first. A sinus augmentation or sinus lift is required if the bone in these areas has shrunk or dissolved. A sinus lift can also address tooth roots that are too close to the sinus cavity or if the vertical height of the bone is unable to support dental implants. Also, when bone loss occurs, the sinus will sometimes expand into that space and a lift is required to correct it.

THE PROCEDURE
Two sinus lift or augmentation procedures are available and Drs. Toback and Urbanski will determine which one is right for you based on how much bone loss you have experienced. First, the area is numbed with a local anesthetic. A small incision is made in the sinus cavity and the sinus is gently lifted and moved into a more supportive position to encourage new bone growth to fill the newly created space. Grafting material is also introduced under the raised cavity near the existing bone, where it will begin to fuse. Drs. Toback and Urbanski also performs a second type of procedure. Instead of lifting the sinus, an opening is made in the bone and grafting material is introduced to the floor of the sinus cavity to increase the density and give sufficient support for the dental implants.

POST-SURGERY
It typically takes four to nine months for healing to occur and for bone to increase in density. At that point, one or more dental implants can be placed.
